Newfoundland as a world-class cycling destination

Avid bikepacker Robert Downes recently completed a 2000 mile journey from Michigan to L'Anse Aux Meadows and left a glowing review of his experience cycling in Newfoundland. See Robert's full letter to the department of tourism below.

Dear Newfoundland Dept. of Tourism,

I just completed a 2,000-mile bike ride from my home in Traverse City, Michigan to L'Anse Aux Meadows at the northern tip of Newfoundland and wish to express my appreciation for the beauty and variety of your province as a destination for cyclists.

I have cycled all over America, including some of its most beautiful states, such as Montana, but have never felt so exhilarated and awestruck as what I experienced in bicycling through the length of Newfoundland.  The mountains, sea coast, St. Lawrence Seaway and the Viking ruins at L'Anse aux Meadows had vistas I will cherish forever, not to mention the moose sightings.

I urge you to do more to promote Newfoundland as a world-class cycling destination on par with Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton.  As a lecturer on cycling here in Michigan and as communications director of our city's cycling club, I plan to share my experience in Newfoundland in the hope that more cyclists will discover the beauty of your province.

For starters, you might wish to contact the Adventure Cycling Association in Missoula, Montana, which has a membership of more than 80,000 cycle tourers and a widely-read magazine.

Wishing you all the best,

Robert Downes
